Name of the Project
Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project.

Location
On the Zambezi river, in the Marara district of Mozambique’s Tete province.

Project Owner/s
Mphanda Nkuwa is being built by a consortium comprising Electricite de France, TotalEnergies and Sumitomo Corp. The Mozambican government and its Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa company will hold stakes.

Project Description
The project is included in Mozambique’s National Energy Sector Master Plan 2018 to 2043 as a national priority, as well as a priority investment for the Southern Africa Power Pool Plan.

It entails the development of a 1 500 MW hydropower project and associated transmission facilities. It will also include a dam, a power station and 1 300 km of 550 kV high-voltage direct current transmission infrastructure from the project site to Maputo.

The Mphanda Nkuwa project would increase Mozambique’s available electricity production capacity by more than 50% and could power more than three-million households in Mozambique and the surrounding region.

Latest Developments
Mozambique has won World Bank backing for its plan to build the hydropower plant.

The lender plans to provide debt and equity funding, as well as risk guarantees and insurance, for the $5-billion Mphanda Nkuwa plant and an associated $1.4-billion power transmission project, World Bank President Ajay Banga has said.
